Turquoise and Plaid Bubble dress: PR&P

There is a new fun format for Project Run & Play this season, and I love it! Every challenge involves a free tutorial to hack into your own inspiration. This month’s challenge is the Bubble Dress from Alida Makes.

I have never made a bubble dress, mostly because I am kind of frugal with my fabric and hate having to use a ton unless I have some thing laying around. I knew I wanted to do a bodice of short that could work under a sweater or for the days that are warmer, which happens at least 2 times a week this time of year in California. Winter is ridiculous. It feels just like a Katy Perry song- “cuz you’re hot, then you’re cold, you’re yes, then you’re no!” I don’t have the normal Southern California resident problems since I live in the land of extremes: heat, wind, dust, and cold when we get it. No one likes being cold and windy!

Ok, enough of my rambling today. I decided to make a knit cap sleeve bodice. I wanted a wrap front that was slightly off center for a fun detail. I did the bias in some of the Vegan leather from Girl Charlee. Mama is stocking up on that soon! The beautiful turquoise knit was something I found in the remnants at Joann’s. I wish I had more because it is thick and gorgeous. The skirt fabric is a black and white plaid that has very faint lavender and blue stripes in it. I lined the skirt with a dark purple lining fabric I had on hand. I used a t-shirt to draft the bodice, and when I tried it on, it fit beautifully! Score for Me! Once I got to the installation of the skirt, I was fiddling with how I wanted to attach it. I decided to sew it closed and then stretch that bodice to fit with the woven rather than mess with gathering. I gave a slight ruffling look to it and hits at a perfect length. I think I will be saving this bodice for a fun tutorial tunic or dress. What do you think?

I am really excited about the challenge of the new way to participate. I can’t wait to see what I push myself to do as it progresses. Now off to let my little get some rest because she has a little cold, but loves taking pictures and being in the sun for a little bit.
